ITEMS of GENERAL INTEREST

The purpose of this section is to give a brief mention of some facts about members of our group that may be of interest to otherst. Contributions are encouraged. The items should be limited to the period we spent at Karori School, and not concern achievements or events after that period i. e. secondary school, university, career, family, etc.

  1. John Ellison was the Captain of the Wellington Primary Schools A Cricket Team.
  2. Denys Sumner was the Vice Captain of the Wellington Primary Schools Rugby Team.
  3. Peter Wilson’s father was an architect, as was Barbara Einhorn’s father, and they worked together. (Peter himself became an architect).
  4. When Peter Wilson’s father passed away the Wilson family moved to California. Peter’s mother was from the USA.
  5. Bill Mclean played his rugby for Karori School under the heavy burden of his famous rugby name: His uncle Hugh played for the Allblacks in the famous 1935-36 Tour of the UK; another Uncle Gordon played for Wanganui; his father played for Taranaki and Wellington; another uncle, Terry, was extremely well known or his Rugby reporting and books on the game, and was instrumental in starting the Sports Post.
  6. Michael Frost played his rugby for Karori School blissfully unaware that he too was also related to an Allblack. Later in life while researching his genealogy he discovered that his grandfather’s brother, Harry Frost, played one game for the Allblacks in 1896.
  7.  Barbara Einhorn asks “Does anyone remember padder tennis and that wonderful man who introduced the game?” (sure we do Barbara, it was a great game and Mr. Melody was a terrific guy)
  8. Karori School had a Choir and the Choir Mistress was Mrs. Worboys. There were 12 members of the choir and Diane Wintle and Wendy Thomas were among them. The Choir won the Wellington Primary Schools Choir Competition that was held at the Wellington Town Hall. Howard Morrision, at that time the most well-known pop singer in NZ, asked the school if the choir would like to be his chorus in his  song ‘Sippin Soda’. It was sold as a record and all the chorus members received and copy and a signed autograph from Howard. Who were the other members of this choir?
  9. Wendy Thomas graduated from Nursing School in Wellington and was employed at Wellington Public Hospital. One of her patients was Mr. Melody, and she nursed him in his final days
  10. Barbara Einhorn’s parents left Germany in 1939 shortly before the outbreak of WW2 and settled in NZ.
  11. The father of Mavis Coutts and his brother emigrated to NZ from the Shetland Islands.
